The English Afternoon Tea is attributed to Anna, the 7th Duchess of Bedford, who was said to have complained of "having that sinking feeling" during the late afternoon and took tea with sandwiches and cakes to stave off the hunger in her boudoir. She later invited her friends to join her for tea in the afternoon and as other social hostesses picked up on the idea, soon, all of fashionable society in London would dress in long gowns, gloves and hats would meet for afternoon tea or “low” tea, so-called as it was usually served in the drawing room on low tables just before the fashionable promenade in Hyde Park.
Today at Stapleford Park, this quintessential English tradition of socialising and relaxing with the warmth of tea and friendship is kept very much alive.
English Afternoon Tea is served daily between 2.30 p.m. and 5.00 p.m.
